Anthropic Settlement FAQ

What is the Anthropic settlement? How does it work? Where can I find information about the settlement?
This settlement resolves a class action lawsuit brought against the artificial intelligence startup company, Anthropic, over the company’s use of pirated books to train its AI model. You can find background and information on the Anthropic Copyright Settlement Website and the FAQ on that website.

How do I know if my book is part of the settlement?
You can search the database of the 400K+ books that are part of the settlement here

I understand that a book has to be registered for copyright in the US to be eligible for the settlement. How can I see if my book(s) has been registered for copyright?
Check online at the U. S. Copyright Office, https://publicrecords.copyright.gov/. The database can be difficult to search. Tip: search author name, pseudonym, title, sub-title, and all of these in keyword if nothing is coming up; also search all name variants – e.g. “Nora Keita Jemisin” as well as “N. K. Jemisin” and “N K Jemisin.”

I didn’t find a record of my book in the U. S. Copyright Office database. What do I do now?
Reach out to subsidiaryrights@ucpress.edu and we will look in our records for the registration number or proof of application before assuming it was not registered. If your book was published recently, it might not be in the Copyright Office database yet. The copyright office can take up to 8 months to process an application, and these days, they sometimes take longer. However, we can provide you with the application number to indicate it is in the queue for registration.

Note: Not all works included in the LibGen or PiLiMi training sets were used by Anthropic and only books that were used by Anthropic prior to the date of the lawsuit are included in the settlement. Thus, very recently published books will likely not be part of the settlement.

My book was registered for copyright, but I don’t see it in the settlement database. Why?
The judge restricted the category of the settlement to books that were torrented or otherwise directly pirated. As such, it is restricted to books that were not bought; Anthropic still bought, stripped, and scanned many books. Additionally, only books that were used by Anthropic prior to the date of the lawsuit are included in the settlement. Thus, very recently published books will likely not be part of the settlement. You can find more information about what titles were included in the FAQ on the Anthropic Copyright Settlement Website

Does UC Press intend to file a claim? Should I also file a claim?
UC Press intends to file claims for all eligible UC Press books included in this settlement. We are providing our and our authors’ necessary information to the settlement administrator. The settlement administrator will use the information provided by UC Press to reach out to authors. However, you should also file a claim in order to ensure that the settlement administrator has your most recent and preferred contact information, and you can do this even if you are not the sole author of a volume. You can find claim information here and details about how to submit it here

How much will my payment be?
We don’t know how much each author will receive. You can find more information about how the payments will be calculated in the FAQ on the Anthropic Copyright Settlement Website

Who will be sending the payment from the settlement? How do I ensure that I receive my payment?
Payments will be sent directly from the settlement administrator (not from UC Press). UC Press will file on behalf of all of our known impacted titles. The settlement administrator will use the information provided by UC Press to reach out to authors. However, you should also file a claim in order to ensure that the settlement administrator has your most recent and preferred contact information. You can find claim information here and details about how to submit it here

When will I receive payment from the settlement?
Payments will be sent directly from the settlement administrator (not from UC Press). There will be several rounds of payments. The first round is planned to begin in 2026 and there will be additional rounds in 2026 and 2027 until payments are fully disbursed. You can find more information about the payment timing in the FAQ on the Anthropic Copyright Settlement Website

The Court must give final approval to the settlement before it can take effect, so these details may be subject to change and you will want to use the settlement website as your resource for important updates.
